About Shorty's Deluxe

Shorty's Deluxe is a neighborhood sandwich shop at 2016 Mount Vernon Avenue in Del Ray, open every day from 9am to 4pm.

Our story

Shorty's opened in 2024 in the same space that was once home to Neighborhood Provisions, a meal delivery program started during the COVID-19 pandemic to bring chef-prepared food to neighbors while staying home was the safest choice. When Provisions wound down, we kept the kitchen going and gave it a warmer home: a small counter where every sandwich is made to order.

The shop is named for Orlando "Shorty" Aparicio, who has been part of our restaurant family since The Evening Star Cafe opened a few doors down in 1997, and who has had a hand in every restaurant we've opened since.

The kitchen

Our menu comes from Chef Nate Anda, who has been cooking in Northern Virginia since 2004, when he took over the kitchen at Tallula in Arlington. He went on to found Red Apron Butcher and has earned a Good Food Award for his charcuterie and a StarChefs Rising Star award. At Shorty's, that shows up in the details: bread made in-house, meats sliced to order, and sandwiches named after the Ramones. (Yes, The Joey and The Marky are who you think they are.)

What we make

Our signature is The Joey, a muffuletta on housemade focaccia, sold by the slice or as a whole 8-slice sandwich for groups. We also build hoagies on our 7-inch roll, including the Italian Stallion, Italian Beef, Porkstrami and a Meatball Sub made with pork meatballs from our friends at Red Apron. Pastries come from Buzz Bakeshop, and the coffee is Illy.

Feeding a group?

The Joey and The Marky come in party sizes from a single slice up to a whole 8-slice sandwich. Add salads, sides and pastries, and order catering directly with us online.

Good neighbors

Del Ray is a neighborhood of neighbors, and we have good ones. The Evening Star Cafe and HiFi are a few doors down, and Goldfinch Social is right upstairs. Grab a sandwich, then say hi to the block.
